Memorial service for Sarah “Susie” Elizabeth Anderson Mullis, 72, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2011, in the Turkeytown Methodist Church. Bench dedication and luncheon to follow at the church.
Mrs. Mullis died Thursday, June 9, 2011.
She was born in Gadsden to Mary Art Garrison and Thomas Harvie Anderson on Nov. 9, 1938, and graduated from Gaston High School as valedictorian for the class of 1956. She went on to graduate magna cum laude with a B.S. degree from Jacksonville State University of Alabama in 1959; and worked for the Extension Service in Fort Payne, then later Jacksonville, Fla., where she met and married George “Buddy” Kirkland Mullis Sr. at Riverside Presbyterian Church (attending until retirement to Gadsden in 2004).
Sarah taught childcare and child development at Englewood Sr. High School, Jacksonville, Fla., and was beloved by all during her 29-year tenure; she also taught summer programs for autistic students and work-for-credit. She was known across the South for her sour cream pound cakes and other recipes. While living in Gadsden, she attended Trinity Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include husband, Buddy Mullis; daughter, Amy (Bill) Dryden; son, George (Shari) Mullis; sisters, Nancy Barnes, Dapha Stevens, Tommie Hart, Melinda Foster and Nena Palmer; brothers, Ernie and Randy Anderson; grandchildren, Nicholas, Alyssa and Brandt Mullis.
