Bibb County deputies have arrested a 69-year-old man who fatally shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself on Jan. 5.

Capt. Mike Smallwood said deputies arrested James Wilbur Mullis when he was released from the hospital on Friday.

Mullis is charged with felony murder in the death of his wife, 71-year-old Betty Mullis.

He is being held without bond at the Bibb County jail, according to jail records.

Smallwood said it’s fairly rare that a person survives a murder-suicide attempt to be arrested.

“It’s real rare,” he said. “But it’s still murder. He took another person’s life.”

Deputies were dispatched to Mullis’ home, located at 5545 Marion Road, at 5:42 p.m. Jan. 5 after neighbors called 911 at James Mullis’ request, according to the sheriff’s office.

When deputies arrived, they found Betty Mullis dead with a gunshot wound to her head. James Mullis was taken to The Medical Center of Central Georgia for treatment of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

Information from The Telegraph archives was included in this report.
