CYNTHIA “CINDY” DIANE MULLIS

Hampton

Cynthia “Cindy” Diane Mullis, 56, was taken suddenly from her family and friends on Saturday, June 26, 2010.

Cindy, the youngest of three Johnson girls from Macon, Georgia, was born on August 16, 1953. Cindy met her soul mate while in high school, married at age 19, and their union lasted for 37 years. From this union they were blessed with three children and six grandchildren. She loved her family and could never do enough for them. Cindy considered her life’s work her family and was unselfishly dedicated to them. Cindy’s philosophy was life was for “making memories”. We, her husband and children, only hope to approach the standard she has set for us. We will never forget the warmth of her welcome, her infectious laughter, and her generosity of heart. She leaves an unfillable void behind.

Survivors include her beloved husband, Dean “Skip” A. Mullis; three children, Paul and his wife, Amy, Thomas, and Brandy; and six grandchildren, Ashley, Brady, Guy, Tanar, Shelbie, and Nathan. Other survivors include her sisters, Elizabeth Wade and her husband, Ken, and Patty Halverson and her husband, Donny; and sisters-in-law, Debbie Callihan, Dione Ringer, and Dianne Touhy. The Mullis family is inclusive of many young people who considered themselves “Mamaw’s children”. She loved and cared for each of them.

A celebration of Cindy’s life will be held at 7 PM on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:30 PM.

Memorial donations may be made to the Childrens Hospital of the Kings Daughters, P.O. Box 2156, Norfolk, VA 23501.

Please leave condolences at www.wjsmithandsonfh.com.

Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.

Ms. Mullis, the daughter of the late Dr. Domingo Tambuatco and Marie Haus Tambuatco of Manila, Philippines, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 29, 1926. After her father completed his medical residency in the U.S., the family returned to the Philippines. The oldest of four children, she lived through the Japanese occupation of Manila during World War II. After the war she married the late Dr. Leonard H. Campbell (a Captain in the U.S. Army) and returned to the United States.
While raising a family she continued her education earning degrees from Wesleyan, Mercer, and the University of Georgia. A firm believer in giving back to the community, she was a tireless volunteer and in later years served two terms on Macon City Council. Two of her proudest public service accomplishments were helping to found the Greater Macon Women Business Owners Association, and through her efforts on council, helping to make the Marriot City Center Hotel project a reality.

I met Ms. Mullis when I was in Kindergarten at The Reading and Learning Center in Macon, GA. It was there that I was found to have dyslexia. Because of Ms. Mullis, I was able to get the help I needed. I went on to earn a graduate degree, and I have always believed that Ms. Mullis was a big part of me being able to succeed. In later years, Ms. Mullis was able to do the same for my nephew. He was basically written off as a difficult child to teach, and an undesirable child to have in one’s classroom. As a result of the wisdom and guidance that my sister received from Ms. Mullis, as well as a lot of hard work by my nephew, he is now a junior at one of Georgia’s major universities. I will never forget what Ms. Mullis did for me and my family. She will truly be missed.

Filomena was a tireless advocate for children and their educational success, a side of her that many may not have realized or about which they may not have known. Because of Filomena, many children benefited emotionally and educationally over the years. Zichrona li’vracha aleha ha’shalom – of blessed memory, may peace be upon her.

Mark, I am so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I have to say that I have some great fun and funny memories of her..She never had a problem telling you just what she thought and she got her point over and it was all in love. I will never forget when I was younger and worked for her at the Reading and Learning Center she fired me and told me I could do better and needed to move on. I was so shocked, I stood there with my mouth open. I could not believe that had just happened. But it was because of her I moved on, not believing enough in myself enough to know I could do better. Boy, did she make a believer out of me that day! Thanks to her I believed what she said and now that I am much older I can look back and see what she was doing. She gave me wings to fly. Thanks Ms. Mullis…R.I.P your job here is done..Well Done!
