Western gets its chance at regionals

Ryan Mullis never thought that the Western Little League 13-14-year-old all-stars could win the state championship.

After all, most of the players had been playing all-star baseball at Western for a couple of years, and they had not made it past the district tournament. But this year has been different. Not only did they roll through district play, they cruised through the state tournament, defeating Toccoa 3-2 in the championship game.

Youthful Wolverine netters look for improvement

May 3, 2009 in Sports

SWITZ CITY — Second year White River Valley girls tennis coach Katie Mullis enters the season in search of her first win in charge of the Lady Wolverines. Mullis will have to replace five starters from last season’s 0-13 team, but is optimistic about the season.

“We will have pretty much a brand new team this year,” Mullis said. “We have a lot of young girls but I have all the confidence in them and just want them to go out and have fun.”

Senior Kendra Brown will be the Lady Wolverines No. 1 singles player this season. Brown played at No. 2 singles last season.

Junior Mindy Neeley will play at No. 2 singles, moving up from No. 1 doubles a season ago.

Brooke Braswell will round out the singles court for the Lady Wolverines, at the No. 3 spot. The sophomore was the top singles player for Mullis last season on the reserve squad and also filled in whenever Mullis needed her to.

“Brooke got some varsity experience last season filling in wherever we needed her to,” Mullis said. “She did a nice job on the junior varsity as well as filling in on the varsity, she should be a big asset to us this season.”

The No. 1 doubles tandem will be comprised of senior Stephanie Decker and sophomore Amanda Mowery.

Mullis said Decker played her freshman year but took the last two seasons off.

Sophomores Danni Higgins and Megan Padgett will be the No. 2 doubles team this season.

“I really like how they both work together,” Mullis said of her doubles team. “They both just have a great attitude and work really hard.”

Sophomores Taylor Blanton and Jenny Nolting will be two players Mullis said she can count on from the junior varsity squad to fill in on varsity if she needs to.

“They both are comfortable at playing singles or doubles and we will turn to them if we need any holes filled this season,” Mullis said. “Their flexibility will be a good luxury to have.”

Foreign exchange student Lena Kanatova, sophomore Sara Wines and freshmen Chelsea Bough, Alyssa Flynn, Jacie Gouckenour and Kylie Cox rounds the roster for the Lady Wolverine netters.

“I have been proud of the girls for the way they have prepared so far,” Mullis said. “They are all trying their best and that is all you can ask of them.

“They all have great attitudes and are working well together. They help each other out and are always encouraging one another. I am very excited to get started and see what they can do.”

WRV will open their season up Monday at home against Linton-Stockton.

Right now dove and deer are not safe in the woods.

Bow hunters can take aim at the animals.
But a couple of guys brought in quite a monster of different sorts.

They dragged him out of the Ocmulgee river right at the Twiggs – Bleckley county line.

At a taxidermy shop in Pulaski county you’ll find stuffed skunk’s boars and bass.

Brady gets wins record

July 18, 2007 in Sports

Jan. 30–John Brady of Annapolis became the all-time winningest coach, boys or
girls, in Baltimore metro history last night when his team won a 55-54 thriller
over visiting St. Mary’s to give him 622 career wins.

The victory enabled Brady to pass the late Cardinal Gibbons coach Ray Mullis,
who was 621-346 (.642) in 31 seasons.

Only retired DeMatha coach Morgan Wootten (1,274-192, 46 seasons) and Cokey
Robertson, (765-590), in his 39th season at St. Maria Goretti in Hagerstown,
have more wins in Maryland state history.

A signature for a future

July 18, 2007 in Sports

Feb. 8–When Harry Van Arsdale was hired last spring to lead the varsity
football team at Porter Ridge High School, he was way behind schedule.
Fortunately for the new head coach, he had some talented, high-character players
to lean on.

Those students helped set the foundation for the second-year Indian Trail
program, Van Arsdale said, and led the Pirates to the first two victories in
school history in the fall. On Wednesday, a few of them were rewarded when they
signed scholarship offers to play football in college.
